What is scumbro? 6 Minute English

There's a new look in town, which some people are calling 'scumbro'. Scumbro combines the word 'scummy' which means 'dirty and messy' with the word 'bro', which is an informal way of referring to a boy or man. Slang words are words you should only use in an informal situation. Here are four examples... gutted. This is an adjective and means very sad or disappointed. I just failed my driving test for the fourth time! I'm gutted. knackered. This is also an adjective and means really, really tired. I went to a party last night and now I'm knackered! skint. This means to have no money or very little money. I can't come out tonight, I'm skint. loaded. If someone is loaded, they are very very rich. I just won the lottery – I'm loaded! Describing Generation Z: 6 Minute English

In this programme, we look at Generation Z - a name that describes the people born in the late nineties or early noughties. Also known as Gen Z, they are seen as the social media generation. We discuss other characteristics of this young generation and learn some new vocabulary along the way. This week's question: No one can quite agree on who first used the term 'social media', but we do know from which decade it came.
